This month, the BNJC Book Club will be reading The Golem and The Jinni by Helene Wecker. This historical fantasy fiction was Wecker’s debut novel, and won her multiple awards including the Mythopoeic Award for Adult Literature and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award.
About The Golem and The Jinni:
Set in New York, 1899, the novel combines Yiddish and Middle Eastern folklore to tell the story of Chava, a golem and Ahmad, a jinni from the Syrian desert. The two mythical creatures form an unlikely bond as they try to make sense of the world around them, in an immersive adventure that explores an allegory of the immigrant experience.
About our book club
Our book club is a chance to get together to discuss books with some connection to Jewish culture. Our books will include both fiction and non-fiction, contemporary and classic books by British and international authors and established and aspiring authors. Books will be chosen by a vote and we encourage everyone to make suggestions.
Please register to let us know you’ll be coming. All are welcome!
