Brighton Walking Tour (with a Jewish Twist)

18 April @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Stroll through 250 years of Jewish history in Brighton & Hove. Our walking tour combines historic and religious sites & interesting stories.

About the Tour:

This guided walking tour starts at the heart of historic Brighton, the entrance of the city Museum. From there, our walk will take us on a journey through Brighton’s history and pinpoint the moments where the Jewish community have been a central part of the administrative and commercial life of the city since the 18th century. We’ll traverse through the streets and ‘twittens’ of the Old Town, noting Blue Plaques to Jewish residents, and discover the near-forgotten sites of Jewish shops and schools at the heart of Brighton, and its hidden synagogues. This one of a kind tour is not to be missed!

About our Guide:

Dr Geoffrey Mead has taught in the adult education department at the University of Sussex for over thirty years as a Professor of Local History and Landscape Studies. As a Brighton resident and ‘native’ he has a long working knowledge of the geography and history of the city of Brighton & Hove and is keen to share his insider stories and hidden histories.

Useful Information:

  • Meeting point: Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
  • End point: We’ll end our tour back at the Royal Pavilion Gardens.
  • Duration: 90 mins
  • Clothing: It is often colder on the seafront than inland so please wear appropriate clothing. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast and bring waterproofs if rain is forecasted.
