Our Approach to Learning and Care
At Shoresh, we believe every child is full of potential. With the right support, they grow strong roots that shape a lifelong love of learning.
Our approach blends the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) with Montessori principles, encouraging independence, purposeful play and emotional confidence. We offer a calm, home-from-home setting where children feel safe, supported and free to explore.
Jewish life gently shapes the rhythm of each week, from joyful Shabbat songs to seasonal celebrations. We welcome families of all backgrounds, and invite every child to feel a deep sense of belonging.
For Our Youngest Children: The Nest
The Nest is our peaceful space for babies and toddlers aged 0–2.
Tucked just above our main nursery rooms, it offers a slower pace, smaller groups, and gentle, responsive care. With sensory-rich materials and calm routines, babies are supported to feel secure, soothed, and free to explore at their own pace.
Working families are eligible for 30 hours of funded childcare from 9 months. At Shoresh, we stretch this funding across the full year to support continuity and flexibility for you and your child.
Fees, Funding & Flexible Options
Working parents of babies aged 9 months and up are eligible for 30 hours of funded childcare each week. At Shoresh, we stretch funded hours across the full year, making care more consistent for families and simpler to manage. We also offer funded-only places (subject to availability) and accept all major childcare schemes:
– 15 and 30-hour funded places (for eligible families)
– Stretched funding across 47.5 weeks per year
– Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit and local support accepted
There is no deposit to secure a place. A £100 non-refundable registration fee applies, and it remains non-refundable if you choose not to take up the place or cancel before your child’s start date. Families accessing funded hours only are not required to pay this fee. We ask for one month’s notice if you decide to leave a fully funded place.
How Funded Hours Work at Shoresh
We stretch funded hours across 47.5 weeks of the year, to a maximum of 12 hours per week for a 15-hour entitlement, or 24 hours per week for a 30-hour entitlement. Funding can be used on any day. The maximum number of funded hours in a single day is 8 hours, or 7 hours on a Friday as we close at 3:00pm.
If you would like to take your funded entitlement only, with no additional paid hours, sessions run four days a week. A 15-hour entitlement is 3 hours per day (12:00–3:00pm) and a 30-hour entitlement is 6 hours per day (12:00–6:00pm). Funded-only sessions are available at specific times of the week, subject to availability. Families taking funded hours only will need to supply nappies, wipes and sun cream.
All meals are freshly prepared each day by the chefs in our on-site kitchen. As Shoresh is a kosher setting, we are not able to accommodate packed lunches.
Early Learning for Eligible 2-Year-Olds
Shoresh offers 15 hours of funded early education for eligible 2-year-olds, in line with government and Brighton & Hove City Council arrangements. Separately, working parents of children aged 2 to 3 may be eligible for 30 funded hours per week under the working parent entitlement.
Eligibility is based on family circumstances, including income-related criteria, looked-after or previously looked-after status, and certain disability-related benefits. Eligible children can access up to 15 funded hours per week (570 hours per year), subject to availability at Shoresh.

Nursery Closures 2026–2027
We are closed on all major Jewish festivals, on bank holidays, and for three staff training days each year, for which we always give notice.
Autumn Term 2026
– Friday 11 September 2026: staff training day
– Monday 21 September 2026: Yom Kippur
– Thursday 24 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027: Christmas and New Year closure, reopening Monday 4 January 2027
Spring Term 2027
– Friday 26 and Monday 29 March 2027: bank holidays
– Wednesday 21 April to Thursday 29 April 2027: Pesach closure, reopening Friday 30 April 2027
Summer Term 2027
– Monday 3 May 2027: bank holiday
– Monday 31 May 2027: bank holiday
– Thursday 10 June 2027: early closure at 1:00pm for staff training
– Friday 11 June 2027: Shavuot
– Monday 30 August 2027: bank holiday
Meet Bridget, Our Head of Nursery
Bridget has over 30 years of experience in early years education, including founding and running a successful nursery in Brighton for two decades. Her career has taken her from nannying in New York to working in forest schools, supporting children with special educational needs, and mentoring early years professionals across the sector. Bridget is passionate about creating joyful, nurturing environments where both children and educators can thrive. She’s excited to bring her experience and energy to the next chapter of Shoresh Nursery. When she’s not working, you’ll often find Bridget reading, pottering in the garden, out in the wild, or spending time with her family.
Our Safeguarding Guide For Parents
At Shoresh, your child’s safety and wellbeing are our highest priority. Every child has the right to grow up safe, healthy, and supported. We work closely with families and the Brighton & Hove Safeguarding Children Partnership to make sure all children are protected from harm.
