Come in for a coffee, on the house.
New to Brighton & Hove, or new to the Hub? Come in, sit down and say hello. The first coffee is a welcome.
Jewish Brighton & Hove, in a few lines
Jewish life in Brighton goes back to 1766, when the first Jewish resident is recorded. You do not need to be Jewish, or a member of anything, to come in.
The first synagogue opened in a set of rooms in Jew Street, in the Lanes, around 1792. Since then the community has grown and changed, and it is now a community of several traditions.
- Brighton & Hove Hebrew Congregation is an Orthodox synagogue at the Hub on New Church Road, with services every Friday night and Shabbat morning.
- Middle Street Synagogue, consecrated in 1875 and Grade II* listed, is still used for weddings, concerts and open days.
- Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue is on Lansdowne Road in Hove, and the Reform synagogue is on Palmeira Avenue.
The Hub opened on 4 March 2023, after three years of rebuilding. A synagogue, a mikveh, 45 homes and community, commercial and co-working spaces now share one site on New Church Road.
Before you come
How to get in
Like most Jewish community sites in the UK, BNJC is secure. Ring at the gate when you arrive. The security team answers, asks who you are and who you are visiting, then lets you in.
It happens for everyone, every time, so please don’t take it personally. It is there to look after you and everyone else at the Hub.
Anything else to know before you come? Ask, and the team will be glad to help.
Getting here
BNJC is at 29-31 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4AD. Hove station is about a 20-minute walk, and buses from North Street and Churchill Square in central Brighton stop outside. There are cycle racks at the entrance.
Parking
In general there is no on-site parking for visitors. BNJC is in a residential area, so please be considerate of neighbours. Pay and display parking is available on the nearby streets, and there are public car parks close by.
Accessibility
The accessibility statement covers getting around at the Hub. If something you need is not there, ask before you come.
Where to eat
Yofi is the kosher restaurant and café at the Hub, open to everyone. The Deli is its shop, for collecting something to take home. Walk-ins are welcome, and booking is always recommended.

Things to do in Brighton & Hove
Whether you have an hour or a whole day, there’s plenty within reach of the front door.
A short walk
Hove Lawns and the beach, with deckchairs in summer. Wish Park, just off New Church Road, for a playground when the children need to run.
A bus ride away
SEA LIFE Brighton, the world’s oldest operating aquarium, with a glass-bottom boat. Hove Museum and its toy collection. Preston Park and Hove Park, which has a miniature railway on certain days.
The pier
Brighton Palace Pier: arcades, a carousel and rides that are more fun than they look.
The Lanes
Brighton’s old-town maze of narrow alleys, full of independent shops, jewellers and cafés. Easy to lose an afternoon in.
Komedia
One of Brighton’s best-known venues for comedy, live music and cabaret, on Gardner Street in the North Laine. See what’s on at komedia.co.uk.
Out on the Downs
Devil’s Dyke, Ditchling Beacon and Stanmer Park, for walks with views all the way to the sea. Local legend says the devil dug the Dyke himself. Take a picnic anyway.
Jewish Brighton
A guided walk through 250 years of Jewish Brighton, from the Lanes to Middle Street Synagogue. See the next dates.
Jewish Brighton walking tours
A qualified guide leads a two-hour walk through Brighton’s Jewish history, connecting streets you know with stories you probably don’t. The next walks are below.
